ALL ABOUT THE YORKSHIRE DALES CENTRE (YDC)
The Yorkshire Dales Centre was established in October 1975 at the Yorkshire Centres, West & North Groups AGM at the Winter Gardens Ilkley. The Yorkshire Dales Centre was fully formed from 1st January 1976 with a chairman Mr Roy Knowles. In January 1976, the first YDC brochure was produced in the style of a "chequebook". The first Rally was on 13-15 February 1976 and had a valentine’s theme; it was held at Old Bilton with a rally fee of £1.30p. On the 26-28th March 1976, the centre held its christening & dedication rally at Pool Bank (Chevin Park).
In September 1978, the first YDC-organised Three Peaks Walk took place, which grew & grew until some 120 walkers registered to participate, with a briefing Saturday morning at 7.30 am.
In 1984 at the AGM, there were 262 voting members present, and in 1985, 272, which included 28 Teenagers.
In April 1982, the centre hosted its 500th Rally at Ripley Castle.
In April 1987, the centre hosted its 1000th Rally at Bolton Abbey (rather wet venue).
July 1996 21st year Thorp Perrow.
July 2000 silver jubilee & millennium rally at Woodhouse Grove School Appley bridge.
July 2005 30th year celebration rally Pateley Bridge.
April 2009 2500th rally at Harewood House.
April 2015 40th year celebration at Harewood House.
We are currently starting to look for a venue so we can begin preparations for our 50th Birthday in 2025.
Please note that all correspondence for the attention of the committee must be sent to the Secretary in writing by post or via the Secretary's email address; this is because the Secretary is unable to monitor all of the social media feeds (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) for committee business.
The Yorkshire Dales Centre is a volunteer organisation, and as such, we rely on our members to organise and host all our events.
In times gone, the committee had plenty of members (up to 15), and they shouldered most of the responsibility for organising the events schedule and pulling together the rally calendar. Each committee member had a specific role and had to attend every committee meeting throughout the year.
Today we recognise that things are different and external forces often mean that volunteers cannot be on the committee because they cannot commit to attending monthly meetings. Work, health, family, and lifestyle pressures all combine to making it difficult to give the time up to support the club to grow. All that is asked is that you consider if you can support the club in any way possible.
Over the past 18 months, the current committee has worked very hard to redesign the operational structure of centre management and how we do things. The current committee is only small; however, the new systems and procedures we have put in place means that volunteers DO NOT need to be on the main centre committee unless they want to be. We intend to utilise small working groups and sub-committees to ensure things move quickly. These groups will have various responsibilities, from increasing membership to organising events, compiling the brochure, and designing and agreeing on the rally programme. Ultimately, they will report to the main committee monthly, but it is our hope that things can be far more flexible from here on in.
We would very much like all our members to be involved in this process and not just the committee and/or the rally marshals and assistant rally marshals, but we need people to come forward and help.
If you can spare some time to assist us, even if it's for one or two hours a week/month, then please get in touch and have a chat with us.
